What is Compounding?

Scientist in protective gear weighing chemical powder in a lab.

Pharmaceutical compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for patients. Commercial medications don’t always meet every patient’s needs. Compounding allows pharmacists to prepare customized medications in strengths, dosage forms, and combinations selected by your healthcare provider based on your individual needs.

Compounding can help when:

  • You need a different strength than what is commercially available
  • You require a different dosage form (cream, troche, capsule, liquid)
  • You require formulations prepared without certain dyes, preservatives, or other excipients
  • You need medications combined into a single preparation
  • A medication has been discontinued or is unavailable
  • Pediatric or veterinary dosing must be adjusted

When standard options cannot meet your needs, compounding fills the gap. Your health is not one-size-fits-all, so your medication shouldn’t be either.

How to Choose a Compounding Pharmacy

When selecting a compounding pharmacy, consider:

  • Does the pharmacy adhere to applicable USP standards, including USP <795>, USP <797>, and USP <800>?
  • Are pharmacists trained in compounding practices?
  • Are ingredients sourced from FDA-registered suppliers and accompanied by appropriate documentation?
  • Does the pharmacy collaborate closely with healthcare providers?
  • Is patient counseling available?

We are proud to answer "yes" to all of the above questions. Your health deserves careful preparation and professional oversight.

At EpitomeRx, we are committed to preparing patient-specific compounded medications and collaborating closely with healthcare providers to support individualized care.
